this adam sandler movie is better and more touching than I expected. recommended.
SPOILER ALERT
my initial thots on how I’d rewrite:
at least three “loose ends” come to mind:
1. newman (sandler) never uses the universal remote to “rewind and do over.”
2. no explanation is given for why morty (christopher walken) gives him the remote in the first place.
3. newman wakes up and apparently it was all a dream
I’d tie these things together somehow. perhaps morty is reluctant to sell newman the remote because the rewind button is faulty. but newman is impatient so he takes it anyway. when he tries to rewind and do things over better, he is unable to. he is forever pressing the rewind button but it never works.
then, in his death scene, how about having a tear from his ex-wife donna’s eye fall onto the rewind button? this is the magic the button needs: it not only rewinds, it over-rewinds: it rewinds to before he started using the universal remote, i.e. it puts him back on the bed in the “Bed, Bath, & Beyond” store.
these ideas wouldn’t greatly improve the movie. the story already works. but these are some of my thoughts.
if you like this movie, you will also like “the family man” (2000, nicolas cage, tea leoni)
